2014

Teachers from Trafalgar, South Peninsula and Athlone organized a historical athletics event at SP’s sports field in Steurhof. The triangular became known as the SACOS event and it was a throwback to the heyday of athletics at schools. I applied online at the “11th” hour for the deputy principal post. I was a reluctant applicant but received lots of support from post level one teachers and the NUPSAW (Educational Sector) union. Two of my aims were to speak up for the teachers and to also support the students when it came to improving academic results and basic sanitation and infrastructure.

CAPS (Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement) was introduced in 2012 and this year was the first time that the senior class would write a CAPS examination. So the curriculum had changed again!

Mr Buffkins’ retirement signified the end of an era as he had been with us since the late seventies. He had made a name for himself not only in Woodwork and History but also through excellent coaching and management in athletics and cricket. The Alumni executive members organized a splendid MOTHER OF ALL REUNIONS at school in December, utilizing the hall, playground and surrounding sports fields. The reunion brought together ex-students from different epochs and who had made their mark in various disciplines and fields of expertise. The Facebook page, Athlone High School an ongoing journey, created by Clive Newman had now become a very popular space to share news and information.
