Two of the main events this year were the acquisition of a computer laboratory and a hall which replaced the prefabs in the western section of the main quadrangular. Mr Bekkers cut the tape to the entrance of the computer lab and there was great excitement about our first official computer room. The opening was attended by staff members, department officials and my late parents, Reverend and Mrs R Hendricks. My dad had been the chief invigilator of the matric examinations for many years. The acquisition of a school hall had been an aspiration of Athlone High. We now had our very own hall which we could utilise for assemblies, concerts, valedictory events, fashion shows, matriculation examinations and so forth. The hall has also been used to host church services.
