The start of the new millennium made us more determined than ever to provide an excellent education for our students. Our fortitude against great odds is a continuously admirable trait of our school. It had become clear that “freedom, peace and conscience were brought into the market” to quote a line from the Russian novel, Crime and Punishment. There were political and market forces at work in education that were threatening to undermine and consume us. An inscription in the Muir Street mosque in District Six epitomizes our school’s outlook in overcoming challenges: “Enthusiasm is the vehicle of my life. Sorrow is my friend. Knowledge is my weapon. “
