1999

Someone who had become closely linked to the school and who came to represent the diligence of the school retired at the end of the year. A gentleman who had put his life and soul into Athlone and who was responsible for so many different aspects of school life was Mr John Bekkers. He had become synonymous with the school for so many different reasons. He had done an excellent job in performing his duties as the subject head for Mathematics and Physical Science. He had also been responsible for the time-table and teacher allocation and he was the referee for the inter-house athletics competition. Mrs Wilson conducted the choir at the Samaj Centre in Rylands where they sang “I did it my way” at Mr Bekkers’ farewell. His speech was a typically inspirational and feisty one, punctuated by the unique humour by which we came to know him.
