1992

Our last place in the section C of the schools’ athletics competition led to lots of reflection amongst staff members. In hindsight one could now say that failure must happen in order to succeed. For any school’s success and unity of purpose, it is important not to apportion blame to any party when something goes wrong. The collective vision and mandate for prosperity must continually be placed in front of all the stakeholders. AHS had previously come last in athletics events for example in the A sections of the years 1978 and 1990.

In a spirit of restitution and learning from one’s mistakes in athletics, we move forward and endeavoured not to repeat them. We introduced a cultural programme, offering the students a vast array of electives including photography, chess, street law, debating and home economics (baking and cooking). The students were thrilled as school became a place for learning not just about the contents of curriculum subjects but also to learn life skills in areas that could also become their hobbies.
